Save the 13 Charged for Leading Peace Walk in Myanmar

On Sept 21 this year, 13 young people were arrested by the Myanmar government for leading the Peace Walk in different parts of the country to commemorate UN International Peace Day.

They were charged under Article 18 of of the Assembly and Procession bylaw for staging a public gathering without official permission.

These young people are facing lengthy jail terms from one to ten years – and all because they want peace in their motherland, a stop to constant violence that has ravaged the nation for so many years, and peace to fill each and every corner of their beloved country.

What is wrong with wanting peace and prosperity to finally descend upon Myanmar?

The manner with which they chose to display this is to have all the people of Myanmar to join them as they walk in a non-violent, non-threatening manner. It was the Peace Walk.

These peace activists aimed to resolve the ongoing civil conflicts in Kachin State and other ethnic areas by creating an awareness through these peaceful marches.

Freedom of expression is not a crime. They were peace-lovers who wanted to stop the war in their own country. They carried out their peaceful marches without causing harm to the other people. Help them now by appealing to the government to release them of these unfair charges.

We ask that the Myanmar government look into this matter soberly and see that the intentions of these 13 young people are noble and sincere, and that all they want is for peace to reign in Myanmar.

We ask that the world community stand as one and impress upon the Myanmar government to release these 13 young people and others who are in similar situation.

We ask that acts of intimidation and threats of persecution be no longer used on people who are devoted to seeing a more progressive country and community emerging from Myanmar.

We ask all these for the sake of a better tomorrow for all.
