Stop Horse Racing Torture

Horses on American race tracks are breaking down and being put down every year by the thousands. If they don't die at the track but run too slow to be a winner they are sold to slaughter and endure a very painful death at the slaughterhouses.

Why is horse racing in America so remarkedly deadly? One reason - a culture of rampant drug use on the horses. Horses with fractured legs are drugged up so they can run through the pain but more often than not they don't make it to the end of the race.

The numbers of race horse deaths doesn't happen in Europe or the rest of the world. The single factor that separates the United States from Europe is the medications. In France the horses are tested before every race and there can be no drugs at all in the horse.

It's not just drugs that causes deaths at the track. Man European horses are smaller than U.S. horses. That's because U.S. horses are pumped with steroids from birth to build muscle so they can get more money for them at sale. However this makes their bodies too heavy for the frame to support thus the bones break.

The Jockey Club has tried to get legislation passed to create uniform and strict safety regulations across the country. However the track owners and stakeholders with the big money have prevented this kind of legislation from passing.

We need to force our legislators to pass legislation to save the race horses and the industry.
