Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte came to power thanks to his hardline anti-drug, anti-crime platform. But no one knew then, the day he took office, that he would be the one committing crimes — crimes against humanity.
Since he has taken office he has presided over the extrajudicial killings of as many as 12,000 people. People who may have been innocent of their crimes were
shot dead in the streets by deaths squads with Duterte's blessing.
Human rights activists and organizations have taken notice and have warned that Duterte is committing
serious violations against his own people. Their alarms have garnered the attention of several countries and international bodies and
he could even face prosecution by the international crimes court. All this pushback has so enraged the Filipino president that he has now
issued a hit list containing 600 human rights activists, threatening them with beheadings if they report on his actions.Yet, knowledge of these atrocities
hasn't stopped the UK from supplying Mr. Duterte with the means to realize his threat. According to reports,
" the UK government has already sold him around £150,000 worth of surveillance technology, including IMSI-catchers, which are used to eavesdrop on telephone conversations, and surveillance tools to monitor internet activity." That means one of the foremost champions of human rights is actually facilitating human rights violations in another country. This is beyond hypocritical, it's wrong.
Demand the immediate end to the export of surveillance and other repressive technologies to the Philippines. Please sign the petition and tell the UK to stop supporting Duterte's reign of terror.
