Amazon's Facial Recognition Could Be Used to Create a Surveillance Database. Don't Choose Profit Over People!

The ACLU, activist nuns, and members of the Black Congressional Caucus all agree: Amazon's facial recognition technology, Rekognition, poses a serious threat to civil liberties in the United States.

We want Amazon to stop selling this technology to law enforcement agencies like local police, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and similar entities now.

Rekognition is an extremely powerful software program capable of far-reaching potential. It can identify up to 100 people in an image — like a crowded protest — and track their movements. It's mass surveillance, automated, with little oversight or control, no matter what Amazon claims.

This technology could be used to profile, track, and harass people, and will likely be used to target people of color, activists, immigrants, and members of other vulnerable groups. Imagine an undercover cop at an anti-ICE action relying on security camera footage and a phone app to track people through the crowd. Or the use of facial recognition to quickly spot undocumented immigrants on public transit and flag them for law enforcement.

Think about not knowing when you're being entered into a facial recognition database, how that information will be used, and whether it will ever be archived or destroyed.

But Amazon doesn't just sell Rekognition: It also provides user support and training with company resources, teaching people how to leverage the technology in a variety of ways. That means Amazon can't take a "hands off" approach to the marketing and sales of its facial recognition tools. Its hands are on, and very dirty.

Why is Amazon enabling the expansion of automated surveillance, especially at a time when civil liberties are under intense threat? Why does Amazon want to enable law enforcement agencies with a proven bad track record when it comes to respecting rights and autonomy?

Amazon needs to stop selling and supporting Rekognition to government entities that do not have the best interests of everyone in mind.

Join us in telling Amazon it's time to take a stand: People, and civil liberties, over profits.
