Act Now! Ditch Single-Use Plastics, Reduce Plastic Pollution

Globally 95% of plastic packaging, like water bottles and takeaway containers, is used once and then discarded. Up to 130,000 tonnes of plastic will wind up in our oceans each year. Scientists estimate that by 2050 there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish.

Plastic pollution is having a massive negative impact on our Aussie wildlife: 70% of loggerhead turtles found dead in Queensland waters had ingested plastic and the likelihood of disease increases significantly when corals are in contact with plastic.

Australians alone produce over 3 billion tons of plastic waste each year, and this fact — when paired with the national plastic recycling rate (11.8%) — bodes poorly for our environment. In short, the science is irrefutable. We need to do something right now if we want our oceans and our marine life to have any future.

WWF-Australia is focused on protecting our oceans by reducing the impacts of plastic pollution. Plastic is a useful material, but it needs to be managed in the right way. It should be valued as a resource, not waste. Each of us can make a difference by rejecting single-use plastics and recycling what we do use (to minimize the need for new virgin plastics). Will you pledge to reduce your use?
