Demand Maximum Sentence for Acid Attack on Afghan Women

After Mumtaz Muhammad's father denied a would-be suitor her hand in marriage, the suitor and his brothers retaliated by throwing acid on Mumtaz, her two younger sisters, and her mother. Four men suspected of being involved in the attack have been arrested but have yet to face prosecution.

Sign this petition to urge the Afghan government to apply the maximum sentence for these brutal acts of violence against women.

Under the 2010 Elimination of Violence Against Women law, chemical attacks on women are forbidden and attackers face a maximum of life imprisonment. Since the law was enacted, though, only 7 percent of 2,300 reports of abuse have been prosecuted.

Sign here to send a clear message that violence against women is unacceptable by asking the government of Afghanistan to prosecute the arrested men and to seek the maximum sentence for the perpetrators of these inhumane actions.
