Stop the executions in Iran!
The Iranian government has recently begun a crackdown on political activity in advance of the 1 year anniversary of the 12 June presidential election. In an attempt to intimidate protestors, executions of political dissidents and members of religious minorities have been taking place with increasing frequency. Often the families and legal representatives of the prisoners are not notified of the executions, only to be made aware days later. Additionally, Iranian authorities have refused to return the bodies of the prisoners to their families for proper burial.
These executions are in violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, of which Iran is a member. Because the Iranian government has made silencing the opposition a priority, the rest of the world must speak out in support of human rights for Iranians.
We, the undersigned, are gravely concerned with the ongoing human rights violations that have been taking place in Iran since the 12 June presidential elections. The reported rape, torture, and murder of political dissidents is in violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, of which the Iranian government is a member.
We urge you to adhere to international human rights standards and put an end to politically motivated executions. We also call for the release of political prisoners currently in custody and all charges against political dissidents to be dropped.
