Keep your word, bring peace to the people of Darfur

This is an open letter to President Obama, Vice President Biden,  and Secretary of State Clinton demanding that they live up to the countless promises they all made during their Presidential campaigns to take action against the President of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir, and his genocidal campaign in Darfur.

Since taking President Obama and his administration has taken office, the Sudanese Government and President Bashir has continued its genocidal campaign with impunity, expelled the largest humanitarian aid organizations from Darfur, terrorized and bombed refugee camps across the border in Chad, and continued its use of rape as a weapon of war.

In response our government, after making all those promises, has appointed a Special Envoy to Darfur and had a few high level meetings to discuss our options. This will not do. The longer our administration waits the more people are killed, more women are raped, and more children starve. The time for meetings is over. Its time for action. We are asking President Obama and his administration to;

1) Increase the economic pressure on the Government of Sudan through the use of increased sanctions and to use the powers granted to them by previous Executive Orders to add more companies operating within the targeted oil production market of Sudan to the Office of Foreign Asset Control list effectively ordering the divestment of all State and Federal Retirement Programs from these companies.

2) Raise the needed funds to ensure that the refugees receive life-saving humanitarian assistance and protection from further cross border attacks by the Sudanese Government and its Janjaweed militias.

3) Increase support of the immediate deployment of an effective international force to disarm militia, protect civilians and facilitate delivery of humanitarian assistance.
We the undersigned ask President Obama, Vice President Biden, and Secretary of State Clinton to keep the promises they made to take all the necessary steps to bring peace to the people of Darfur.

Since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued the arrest warrant for Omar al-Bashir, the President of Sudan, and his retaliatory expulsion of 16 of the major humanitarian aid organizations operating within Sudan and the Darfur region, the situation has grown exponentially worse and continues to do so on a daily basis.

History clearly shows that President Bashir will say and promise anything while stalling and undermining international efforts to bring peace to Darfur. History also shows that he is not alone in his efforts, relying on the political aid and influence of China and Russia to destroy any UN effort to bring peace to Darfur through their use or threat to use their right to veto as members of the UN security council.

It is obvious that the United States alone must take the lead and take a stand against the actions of President Bashir and the Sudanese Government thus living up to our commitment to "Never Again" allow atrocities such as these to go unpunished.

We submit that through heavily increased sanctions and the use of powers granted by Executive Order #13400 to add names of companies currently operating within the target markets of oil and chemical production within Sudan to the Office of Foreign Asset Control list, we can effectively increase economic pressure on the Sudanese Government as well as set a positive example for other nations to follow.

We also believe that since the vast majority of humanitarian relief was expelled from Darfur, it is necessary for the United States to contribute funds to the humanitarian relief efforts currently taking place on the eastern borders of Chad. This includes providing necessary equipment, guidance, and/or funding to ensure the safety of the refugees within the camps from continued attacks across the border from the Sudanese Government and its Janjaweed militias.

Lastly we urge you to step up your support for the equipping and deployment of an effective international force to disarm militia, protect civilians and assist in the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Though history shows that President Bashir is willing to continue this genocidal campaign in Darfur at nearly any cost, it also shows that he will eventually break under the weight of severe and immediate economic pressure.

We believe that some type of serious action, including but not limited to the examples above, must be taken immediately because any further time wasted debating or analyzing this senseless killing is only allowing it to continue.

This is administration, from the President down, is built on the foundation of creating hope within not just every American but every global citizen. Your previous promises to the people of Darfur gave them that hope, we now ask that you follow through on those promises so that we can manifest peace for the people of Darfur.

Thank you very much for your time,
