Energy Alberta Corporation, an upstart nuclear company, has submitted a
license application to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to build two
2,000 MW ACR1000 CANDU reactors in Alberta.The ACR-1000 is a 3rd generation nuclear plant design that can produce up to 1200MWe each (the proposed plant would be twinned for approx 2400MWe total output). Although the design draws on original CANDU technology, the ACR-1000 larger than any plant built to date.
EAC's business plan states that they want to bring up to 13 nuclear power plants to Alberta, the primary purpose being to generate power to extract oil from the Alberta tar sands. The company may also sell nuclear energy to the Alberta grid and export it to the USA.
Municipal councils in Peace River, Whitecourt, and Woodlands County have all submitted letter of support for nuclear power plants in their communities. There has been no open debate on the issue.
Please help us send our Federal elected officials a clear message, "Nuclear is not a solution for greenhouse gases. Nuclear is not clean, green, safe or economical! We want to keep Alberta nuclear free!"
