Protect Nuclear Plants from Meltdowns caused by Solar Flares

X-class solar flares from the sun and the strong Electromagnetic Pulse they cause, if directed toward the Earth have the ability to knock down the electrical grid for good. This does not only mean that we would not have electricity and would be technologically sent back 150 years, but also that most of the 440 nuclear plants around the world, if not protected with shielding from EMP and serious backup systems that can last for at least a year could go into meltdown, all in the same week or month.

This is a long way from being a far-fetched threat that we face. We have had two powerful solar flares directed at Earth since 1859 and the last one was in 1921. The strongest one happened in 1859 when the solar flare hit  telegraph offices worldwide, the systems malfunctioned and even paper caught fire, but didn't do much more damage, since we didn't have the technology and the electrical grid we have today.
The sun experiences a period of intense activity that could spark these powerful solar flares every 11 years. We are in such a period now, and it will peak in the summer of 2013. There is no way to predict whether the sun will produce an X flare directed straight at Earth, but such flares are highly likely and the danger to life on Earth from the meltdown cannot be stressed enough.

We the Undersigned, petition the WHO, and the Governments of the world that have nuclear plants on their soil to implement proper EMP shielding and to have backup diesel engines and enough diesel on site to last for at least a year in case of such emergency, since in case of such event the transportation of diesel can be severely disrupted or halted.
