Fund Transportation for Arlington Crew

We need your support in urging the Arlington Public School Board to continue funding the after-school bus transportation to practices and regattas for all Arlington Public School's (APS) Rowing Teams (Crew).  The APS Superintendent, Dr. Patrick Murphy, has proposed cutting significantly transportation funding for the Yorktown, Washington-Lee, and Wakefield teams.  The School Board will propose changes to Dr. Murphy's budget on April 8, with final adoption of a budget on April 29.

The 200 Arlington student athletes who participate in Crew, (8th to 12th graders from W-L, Wakefield, HBWoodlawn, Yorktown, Williamsburg, Jefferson, Swanson, and Gunston) rely on the buses to provide safe, economical, and environmentally-friendly modes of transportation.  Crew is a non-cut sport which provides the opportunity for any student to participate.  Scholarships are awarded through the Crew Booster organizations to anyone who demonstrates a financial hardship.  The Booster Organizations, operated by parent volunteers, also provide funding for all boats, oars, motor launches, equipment, storage space, and coaches' stipends; items not covered by APS.

It is imperative to the viability of Arlington's high school rowing programs and the transportation safety of the student athletes who participate in these programs, that APS continue to provide bus transportation each spring for practices on both the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and for participation and APS representation at all competitive and notable regattas.  Arlington's high school rowing programs are some of the oldest and most respected in the Washington metropolitan area.

We ask that you sign this petition and help spread the word of this effort to others in our community.  Your help and support are greatly appreciated!

We the undersigned urge you to reconsider the APS Fiscal Year 2011 proposed budget to cut funding ($5,600) of after-school bus transportation for all high school Crews.  The budget also proposes to cut funding ($19,000) of charter buses for Crews to participate in out of town regattas.

The 200 students who participate in Crew (8th to 12th graders from W-L, Wakefield, HB Woodlawn, Yorktown, Williamsburg, Jefferson, Gunston, and Swanson) rely on the buses to provide a safe, economical, efficient, and environmentally-friendly mode of transportation.  Crew is a non-cut sport which provides the opportunity for any student to participate.  Scholarships are awarded through the Crew Booster organizations to anyone who demonstrates a financial hardship.  The Booster organizations also provide funding for all boats, oars, launches, equipment, storage space, and coaches' stipends.  It is imperative to the viability of Arlington's rowing teams and the transportation safety of our student athletes that APS continues to provide bus transportation each spring for practices on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and for participation, as well as Arlington representation, in all competitive and notable regattas.

Your support for funding transportation for Arlington's high school rowing programs is requested and appreciated.  Thank you for your consideration of this effort.
