SEPTA public transportation system is planning to eliminate the availability of transfers starting August 6, 2007. The removal of the transfer system will unfairly affect people of all ages, especially school children. About half of the 53,000 students that ride SEPTA to school everyday use transfers. The Philadelphia School District can not afford to subsidize the cost of extra tokens for the students, as it will cost the already financially struggling district around $2 million. Moreover, most students will not be able to comfortably afford this increased cost. This will cost an extra $360-$720 during the school year, depending on if students buy school tokens or pay the $2 fee. This is an unreasonable cost for public bus transportation. Not only will this affect children, but also urban riders who commute on SEPTA, especially those who take it to work multiple days of the week. SEPTA sees this as a raise in income for themselves, but the extra money will be coming out of citizens' pockets, which is absolutely unfair and unreasonable. Please sign this petition if the removal of transfers will affect you, or if you think the elimination of the transfer system is wrong. Thank you.
