Dyma Loving and Adrianna Green had just lived through a very traumatic experience. They had had an argument with a neighbor that ended in the man pulling out a shotgun and threatening them. Naturally, they called the police to report the incident — but that's when their nightmare got even worse.
The police encounter, which was captured on video by Adrianna, started out routinely, but quickly escalated when Officer A.I. Giraldo arrived on the scene as backup. Apparently he had a problem with how Dyma was behaving, telling the woman — who had just been threatened with a gun — to "calm down" because she was visibly shaken up. When she doesn't calm down and continues to ask to charge her phone so she can call her daughter, the officer then tells Dyma that she "needs to be corrected," forcefully taking her down and putting her in a chokehold. Please sign this petition demanding that Miami-Dade police fire Officer Giraldo immediately for the blatant use of excessive force.
After having her life threatened, Dyma Loving did what anyone would do. She called the police for help. But as a black woman, calling the police carried a huge risk. And rather than getting help, Dyma had to endure police brutality and was herself arrested for "acting belligerent."Officer Giraldo has been suspended, but that is not enough.
His job is to de-escalate tense situations, not make them worse. But from the moment he arrived, Giraldo treated Dyma as the criminal and not the victim, using excessive force to basically put her in her place.Officer A.I. Giraldo needs to go. Sign the petition asking the Miami-Dade Police Department to fire him now.
