Save Texas From Toxic Methane Emissions

  • por: Lynn Hamilton

Texas has grown rich on oil and gas. So why isn't the state doing a better job of protecting its own air?

Instead of complying with federal standards for clean air, Texas is once again taking the United States Environmental Protection Agency to court. The goal this time is to flout regulations that limit the amount of methane that industry can spew into the air.

And that's a problem because methane is one of the biggest contributors to catastrophic climate change. The gas and petroleum industries can reduce the methane that they pour into the air simply by upgrading equipment and being vigilant about stopping leaks. Please join me in asking Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to drop his lawsuit against the EPA and let EPA do its job which is to protect the public and the earth's atmosphere from methane emissions, among other things.

Dear Mr. Paxton:

Texas' gas and petroleum industries have an obligation to reduce the amount of methane they spew into the atmosphere. Not only are methane emissions harmful to human health, they are a huge contributor to catastrophic climate change. The solution is often as easy as upgrading and repairing equipment and infrastructure and being careful to stop leaks as soon as they occur. Instead of fighting the EPA on this, you should be looking at how Texas can comply with federal regulations. Please drop your lawsuit against the EPA and let EPA do its job which is to protect the public and the earth's atmosphere from methane emissions, among other things.
