Big Sugar, a Florida sugar cane industry that is led by United States Sugar and Florida Crystals, is one of the largest contributors of phosphorus-loaded pollutants in the Everglades.
Billions of dollars have been spent for the revival of the Glades, and for what? A small percentage of our marsh has been restored, and it appears that it will be destroyed by Big Sugar in the near future, before it has been given an opportunity to completely rebound.
Big Sugar has repeatedly used their money to get out of trouble. According to an inspection on state Division of Elections records by the Miami Herald/Tampa Bay Times, the Tallahassee Bureau revealed that between the years 1994 to 2016, Big Sugar has given contributions valued at $57.8 million to state and local political campaigns. That ammount doesn't even include the federal contributions!
Case after case, legislators, regulators, and governors have decided to lighten the effect on unfavorable rules and regulations handed out to sugar cane growers and other very powerful industries, such as the harmful cattle operations that are just north of Lake Okeechobee.
We, the people of Florida, are sick and tired of letting detrimental and evasive companies, like Big Sugar, have an impact on our environment.
We, the people of Florida, will not continue to stand by while big corporations value profits over people.
We, the people of Florida, want our voice heard, and we want it heard now!
