Stop Serving Unhealthy, Unsustainable, and Unethical Food on College Campuses

Three corporations – Aramark, Sodexo, and Compass Group – serve millions of meals on college campuses every year. The vast majority of that food comes from multinational corporations and large-scale manufacturers that do a lot of harm in our communities.

These "Big Food" corporations don't pay workers and producers enough to support their families; they rely on practices that damage our health and the environment, such as factory farming and excessive use of pesticides; and they market unhealthy food on campus.

To make matters worse, Aramark, Sodexo, and Compass Group are shutting out too many local farmers, sustainable producers, and disenfranchised suppliers. Instead, they have sided with Big Food corporations like Tyson. It's unjust, and it's harming our health and the planet.

The Campaign for Real Meals is calling on these three foodservice giants to reorient their business model away from a system of exclusive relationships with Big Food corporations and towards Real Meals that support producers, communities, eaters, and the planet.

Sign the petition to urge Aramark, Sodexo, and Compass Group to change their food purchasing practices on college campuses by:

  • Purchasing more food from sources that are local & community based, fair, ecologically sound, and humane;

  • Investing in racial justice and equity by expanding purchasing from disenfranchised farmers, fishers and ranchers and by investing in infrastructure to support market access for disenfranchised producers; and

  • Reducing carbon emissions across the companies' supply chains and factory-farmed meat, poultry and cheese purchases by 25%

Dear Aramark, Sodexo, and Compass Group,

I'm writing to express my support for the Campaign for Real Meals to create a more just and sustainable food system.

It is unacceptable to me that your company is serving food from corporations that exploit workers, harm our environment, and produce unhealthy food. Your company should be an active force for good working conditions, environmental sustainability, and racial justice.

Instead of siding with Big Food corporations like Tyson, foodservice companies should support small-scale producers, disenfranchised farmers and fishers, and sustainable suppliers. I respectfully request that you reorient your business model away from one that relies on exclusive contracts with Big Food vendors and towards one that supports Real Meals.

As a first step, I ask that you do the following on college campuses across the country:

  • Purchase at least 25% of your food from sources that are local & community based, fair, ecologically sound, and humane;

  • Invest in racial justice and equity by expanding purchasing from disenfranchised farmers, fishers and ranchers and by investing in infrastructure to support them; and

  • Reduce your company's carbon emissions and factory-farmed meat, poultry, and cheese purchases by 25%.

Once again, as a consumer, I strongly support these reforms to create a more just, transparent, and sustainable food system.
