Protect Vulnerable People -- Allow the Use of Pseudonyms on Facebook

Changing the current Facebook policy to allow users to use pseudonyms will protect users who would otherwise be vulnerable.

Facebook policy states that users must use their real names. There are several reasons why this policy should be changed to allow the use of pseudonyms.

Some people only use Facebook to interact with family and friends. They don't have a strong need for Facebook because they can communicate via phone, e-mail, or in person. Hundreds of thousands of others use Facebook as a support network. Groups of like minded people – people playing the same games, experiencing similar life problems, and some dealing with social anxiety who are unable to interface directly with others – use it as their only social outlet. For these people, Facebook is vital. Shutting down accounts where individuals have chosen to use a pseudonym results in the loss of an important support network for those individuals. These people run the risk of becoming isolated or even being driven to the point of suicide as a result of this policy.

People may choose to use a pseudonym for many valid reasons including to avoid being tracked by a stalker or abuser. A simple solution is to allow the use of a pseudonym on Facebook after verifying the true legal identity of the user. If an abuse is reported, Facebook can use the information provided through the user's account to resolve any issues or to shut down the account. People should not be reported and have their accounts shut down simply for using a pseudonym. Please tell Mark Zuckerberg that you want this policy changed to allow the use of pseudonyms.
