Help stop inhumane dog traps

In Victoria, Australia 720 (wild dog) traps are set each day by the government. The government use a leg hold trap. Leg hold traps are banned in 80 countries, including Britain because they are considered inhumane.
When a dog accidently walks into the trap a piece of steel clamps down on the paw or leg. One in three times a native animal is caught instead, usually wombats or wallabies. The trapped animal can cry and yelp in pain for three days before a dogger arrives to shoot them if they are not dead already.
The Victorian Government which was put under pressure to find a solution to the thousands of roaming wild dogs, has chosen a different path to all other Australian states. The national push to reduce dog suffering is being resisted by the Victorian Government. In every other Australian state and territory wild dog traps are checked or laced with a lethal poison to ensure a quick death for the dog, except Victoria.
Under a new, national code being developed all other states and territories are urging Victoria to agree to check the traps daily, so the dogs and native animals won't be in agony for up to three days. But the Victorian Government has resisted saying it is costly. The RSPCA says this is "totally unacceptable." The RSPCA says wild dogs suffer the same way pets do,being dogs who just got lost or dumped in the bush. The RSPCA says "they are the same animal, with the same intelligence and capacity to suffer. It's hard to imagine the level of frustration, pain and distress endured by a dog captured in a trap for days on end. It's not the dog's fault they are treated like pests not pets."
The RSPCA doesn't agree with the traps but believes a caught animals suffering is so great it would be better if the trap is treated with poison so the animal dies quickly. A person in every state and territory apart from Victoria would be prosecuted if they set a trap and didn't check it daily. Why does the Victorian Government  allow the trappers to keep the animals trapped in agony for three days?
Victorian scientist Clive Marks, who worked for The Department of Primary Industry developed traps in 1990 that send signals to the dog catcher when the trap is triggered. In 2006 he created a device that delivers poison to the trapped dogs making sure at least they will die quickly and will not be in agony for three days. The Department hasn't implemented either innovation.
The Victorian Government's wild dog trapping program costs taxpayers $1.6 million every year, at $1600 for every dog caught.
Please sign the petition and tell The Victorian Government that its inhumane and unacceptable for dogs and wildlife to be trapped in agony for up to three days. Please tell the Victorian Government how it makes you view our state and why you find these trapping methods cruel and unjust.
