Nike Must Drop Accused Rapist, Cristiano Ronaldo

It's an utterly common story with a despicable trajectory. Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been very credibly accused and is being sued for a violent rape in 2009. His victim suffered not only the rape, but also several officials discouraging her from reporting. Now, 9 years later, she has a lawyer who trusts her and the confidence to tell her true story.

So why is Nike, the purported progressive company, still sponsoring Ronaldo?

Kathryn Mayorga met Ronaldo at a night club in Vegas and she and a friend returned to his hotel room with him. He took her in another room with the pretense of giving her clothes to wear in the hot tub. Instead, he attacked her and anally raped her while she yelled "no no no." Afterwards, he apologized and she ended up in the ER with the physical and psychological trauma of this anal rape.

The story grows even more horrifying as a nurse and then a detective discouraged Mayorga from reporting due to Ronaldo's status, even though there was photographic evidence of the anal trauma. This woman has been through hell again and again, and now it's time for us to stand up for her.

Nike loves playing both sides by running ads like the Colin Kapernick ad, which has made them $6 billion, by the way, while still supporting credibly accused rapists like Ronaldo.

They can't have it both ways. Ronaldo makes them a lot of money (reportedly $1 billion), so I get why they are keeping him on. But it's time they take a stand and drop him.
