Make Contemporary American Indian Issues a Part of Social Studies Classes

A recent study of American textbooks finds that American Indian issues are virtually ignored in school curriculum past the year 1900. That's over a century of American Indian history erased, leaving students with no sense of how current native populations live and interact with the U.S. government.

While the way public schools have taught American Indians has always been dreadful, eliminating all reference to them in the present day is particularly inexcusable. We ask schools to adjust their history and social studies standards to make sure American Indians issues aren't forgotten altogether.
