Safeway has publicly committed to avoid purchasing seafood from the threatened Ross Sea -- the world's last remaining relatively pristine ocean ecosystem. Not only that but, they also have publicly encouraged all countries involved in Antarctic fishery governance (this takes place under the aegis of a management authority known as the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine and Living Resources, abbreviated CCAMLR and confusingly pronounced "cam-lar") to designate the Ross Sea a marine protected area.
The only other company to do this is the progressive Wegmans, grocery chain in the Northeastern United States. The have made a similar statement in support of the Ross Sea. These are nearly unique gestures- a retail operations moving into the political waters in the name of conservation. Since Safeway hasthe buying power of over 1,700 stores, it is an influential move -- precisely what is needed on the side of ocean conservation if we are to have any hope of protecting and resuscitating our ailing seas.
Please Pledge to shop whenever possible at stores that have taken this pledge.
