The Trump administration escalated its all-out war on our environment and pristine wilderness by announcing a new plan to eliminate the Forestry Department.
You read that right. Not reduced, not reorganized. Eliminated.
ALL regional offices are being shut down, and the research program, with all its decades of vital data is being destroyed. The department will be replaced with fifteen "state directors" — political appointees whose function will be to rubber-stamp anything Corporate America wants from them.
Donald Trump is handing over control of 193 million acres of pristine public land to the rapacious corporations eager to mine, log, and plunder our natural wonders and leave us with a barren wasteland.
Stop Trump from destroying the Forestry Department!
The consequences for scientific research will be devastating. Jim Pattiz at Hatch Magazine mournfully notes, "You cannot move a thirty-year watershed study. You cannot relocate a decades-old growth monitoring program. You cannot box up a forest and ship it to Colorado. When these facilities close, the experiments die. The datasets end. The partnerships with universities that took generations to build collapse. And the institutional knowledge of the scientists who ran those programs walks out the door."
What we are looking at is the complete destruction of a federal agency by executive fiat, and Congress MUST intervene and put a stop to it before it's too late.
