USFWS – Ensure Protection of the Tropical Rosewoods at the CITES Meeting

There is nothing more beautiful than the natural greenery of plants, flowers and trees within our forestry areas worldwide.  The concern is that there are more than 300 species of trees that are threatened mostly through illegal overharvesting.  One such species in danger is the gorgeous and graceful Tropical Rosewood (Dalbergia). Read more on the issue at  http://www.arkive.org/brazilian-rosewood/dalbergia-nigra/  & https://secure.defenders.org/site/Advocacy;jsessionid=E5768E0C58B5362504EE2E2647DF87D6.app224a?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=3091&s_src=3WDE1610A1XX1&s_subsrc=071116_ADVACTFF_cites_nondonor&autologin=true&utm_campaign=CITESA2D&utm_medium=email&utm_source=nondonors

The Tropical Rosewood (Dalbergia) is said to be one of the most highly prized trees, especially in the woods of Brazil, being harvested since early colonial days.  The time from these trees is considered very precious, not being very strong yet very resistant to insect attacks.  This graceful tree has dark, round branches that seem to grow in a zig zag pattern, bearing many leaves and flowers that are pea-like in shape with a pale, violet-scent. Their threat is over-harvesting for the timbers as well as its oils and resins.

The purpose of this petition is to urge the USFWS to take a strong stand to help promote the listing of the Tropical Rosewood (Dalbergia) at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting in September and ensure that they are given the protection they need to keep them from the brink of extinction. You can help me with this issue by signing and sharing this petition, adding your own thoughts and comments.

U. S. Fish & Wildlife Services –I appreciate and fully support all of your efforts to co-sponsor proposals involving the protection of various species of wildlife under Appendix I and II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) that is coming up in September in Johannesburg, South Africa.  I strongly urge you to list the Tropical Rosewood (Dalbergia). It is crucial that this species crucial to our environment is regulated and protected from possible brink of extinction.
