Stop Indian Beef Exports

97 percent of India’s population are vegetarian and most are Hindu, a religion that regards all life with respect and the cow especially so. Given this, the fact that India’s beef export industry is booming is bound to raise questions.

In the last few years, India has moved ahead of many supposedly developed countries on key animal welfare issues, including animal testing and dolphinariums. Letting intensive beef farming continue, however, seems to be against every moral issue the government claims to stand for.

Last year, India exported 1.8 tonnes of beef, according to the Times of India, and looks set to become the world’s biggest exporter.

Intensive beef farming devastates the environment, causes suffering to the animals and is incredibly offensive to India’s main religion.

Tell the federal government to end beef exports now.

With regards to animal welfare, India is already far ahead of the United States, Australia, Japan, and even, on certain issues, the EU. We are, therefore, utterly astonished, that you’re letting intensive cattle and buffolo farming for meat continue.

Aside from the fact that this practice is incredibly offensive to Hindus, who make up the primary demographic of our country, the animal welfare and environmental implications are disturbing to everybody.

India should be, and could be, the world leader in ethical practices. Letting intensive beef farming continue for the sake of quick money undermines that completely. Our government has to put a stop to this immediately.  India is not rich, but it is also not desperately poor and there are other ways to make money.

Please end the production and export of beef from India.
