Cut the red tape: let homeless people eat!

Did you know that the number of people who are homeless in Australia is over 100,000 - still as high as it was twenty years ago? That means a huge amount of people across the country are going without the basic comfort and security most of us take for granted. Specifically, it means that lots of people are going without regular, hot or nourishing meals.

In the face of this longterm crisis, local voluntary organisations are doing their best to make homeless Australian people's lives more bearable. But they are struggling, held back by lack of resources, lack of support, and too much red tape. In Cairns, organisations that feed homeless people say that one of the biggest hurdles they face is the stringent food handling laws.

Please sign this petition to demand that the restrictive licensing system in Cairns is revised so that voluntary efforts to feed the homeless are not held back by licensing designed for business ventures. If enough people sign, we can bring this issue to the table in Cairns, and also set a precedent for other Australian regions. Cut the red tape and let homeless people eat!
Cairns Regional Council:

Local voluntary organisations are struggling to meet the needs of homeless people in the area. One of the main obstacles they say they are facing are restrictive food handling laws designed for businesses.

It's vital that food handling legislation is updated to ensure that voluntary projects feeding the homeless are licensed appropriately, so that food reaches those who need it.
