DEMAND End of underwater elephant swimming shows in Thailand

    Elephants swim in the wild and use water to cool off, wash and play around.
    But the training process used to get them to perform has been described as cruel by animal welfare charities.
    Known as 'phajaan', which translates to 'the crush', the training method involve handlers beating animals into submission so that they will be docile for the public
    A UN report said that in Myanmar and Thailand the 'kraal' or 'training crush' method involves placing an elephant in a strong, large stall or cage, tied with ropes to keep the elephant from moving, including being unable to kick, raise or swing its head.
    Nails and sticks are sometimes stabbed into the ears and feet of an elephant.
