A million plastic bags are thrown out each minute! Imagine how much that adds up to in a year! But it doesn't have to be that way.
It all has to start somewhere- Los Angeles should follow suit with San Francisco and ban all plastic bags. We are a big contributer to the trash that ends up in the ocean because we are so close the the beach, and it's time we start taking responsibility for the thousands of marine lives we've helped destroy.
I urge you to help me send the message to Los Angeles's City Council and ban those evil plastic bags once and for all!
We the undersigned would like to acknowledge the severe pollution in the Los Angeles area. A good portion of the trash is held responsible by plastic bags, and it is irrefutable that they are ubiquitous throughout this city's streets.
It is for this reason that we would like to urge you to place a ban on all grocery stores in the Los Angles district. It would place less a strain on grocery stores because they would no longer have to supply them for consumers, and as a replacement they would provide only paper bags, with our without a fee. (The choice would reside with the grocery store owner.)
Each store would have a three month period in which they would have to make it known to their customers that they are outlawing plastic in their stores. This way, the shoppers would not (possibly) suddenly be bombarded with a fee without sufficient time to learn of the store%u2019s new policy. In this time, the grocery store would also be required to inform their customers to bring re-useable bags, and that if they do not comply, there could be a five cents fee (depending on the store) for every paper bag they must use to carry their groceries in. Whole Foods is an example of a grocery store that has successfully informed its consumers of the plastic ban occurring in their store as well as spread the message to their consumers to bring reusable bags.
The above is a brief plan that would severely reduce the amount of plastic bags that are strewn throughout Los Angeles%u2019s street. It%u2019s time we bring change about our city, as we are undoubtedly living in a changing society and a changing world, and it is certain, from the television and radio to newspaper and magazines, that this change is headed towards a more eco friendly society- please do your duty in helping bring about this change!
Also, let it be known that the above proposal is only an example way to ease Los Angeles into a plastic free environment, and it is more the actual banning of the plastic bags, not the above proposal, that we would like you to approve of and bring to Los Angeles.
