US president Trump recently made a distasteful and to many of us racist statement about African countries being 'shithole' countries. This statement sparked an outrage across the globe and in particular in African countries and diaspora communities in Europe.

Not 'shithole' but destabilised countries
It is undeniable that African countries and Haiti are struggling with multiple problems which makes many leave in search of a better life. Instead of denigrating the cradle of humanity one could join existing efforts in improving Africa. Instead of looking down to black people as it appears from the statement one could become a partner in changing their position.
And all this starts by studying history and looking at the world from African eyes. Let us never forget how Arab and European enslavement led to current realities in Africa. It will provide multiple perspectives and help develop policies that empower people. This knowledge could also help understand African-American history who are stll fighting for reparations.
Africa is not a shithole, Africa is heaven.
