Adopt a mandatory bird-friendly building design ordinance in Chicago

Chicagoland has a serious bird-window collision problem — and we need caring people like you to help save birds!

We are asking Chicagoland residents who live or work in Chicago to sign our petition urging the Chicago City Council to support the strong, mandatory bird-friendly building standards in the ordinance introduced by Alder Maria Hadden.

Every year, millions of migrating birds pass through Chicago. Over the past several decades, conservation groups have documented tens of thousands of bird collisions at just a handful of Chicago buildings. A tragic mass collision event at McCormick Place in 2023 — when 1,000 birds died in a single night — demonstrates just how urgent this issue is for birds.

The good news is that buildings can be made safer for birds. After management at McCormick Place installed a bird-friendly collision deterrent, bird collisions dropped by 95%!

Now, Chicago has an opportunity to become a national leader for bird conservation by adopting a mandatory bird-friendly building ordinance.

Chicago has proven that when we all rally together, we can protect our most vulnerable wildlife. Our dedication to protect our nesting Piping Plovers shows the world what compassionate urban conservation looks like. We've proven that protective spirit on the beach, and now let's take it to the sky!
