Texas: Protect the Ocelot and Create More Under-road Wildlife Crossings

An amazing thing happened this year for the first time in decades: ocelot cubs were found in Southern Texas. This is part of a continuing trend that has seen this precarious population grow in the last two years from 50 animals to between 80-100. While this is a huge victory, ocelots are still at risk.

Now, more than ever, as many of the ocelot females enter reproductive age, the ocelots need protection. Road kill is the biggest cause of death in Texan ocelot populations, killing 7 ocelots between 2015-2016. In a population of 80, this is nearly 10% of the population and a major set back for recovery.  This is not going to get better without immediate action. The solution is easy: more under-road wildlife crossings that allow ocelots to move throughout territories without crossing the roadways that could kill them.

By taking these measures and ensuring that every animal is given a chance to live the ocelot population in Texas has a chance of a real and sustainable comeback.

As someone who cares greatly for wildlife I am very excited about the recent population growth of the ocelot in your state. However, this population is still greatly threatened. 


I urge you to put into action more under-road wildlife crossings to reduce the number of roadkill deaths. The current four are not enough as ocelots are still dying. 


With concerted action, the population of this amazing animal can rebound.
