There are more than 1 million vehicle crashes with wildlife every year... killing wolves, grizzly bears, elk, lynx, mountain lions, moose and more. Even worse, collisions are a major cause of death for at least 21 threatened or endangered species already teetering on the edge of extinction, including the red wolf.
That's because today's busy roads and highways create nearly impenetrable barriers, breaking up habitat and open spaces more than ever before. Animals are regularly forced to sprint across many lanes of traffic, endangering their lives — and the lives of people in cars.
But we know that building solutions like smart warning signs and wildlife crossings under and over dangerous roads has the power to save lives. In one pilot, for example, a system of overpasses, underpasses and fencing have decreased total roadkills by 80 percent.
We need more dedicated funding for solutions like this that can save the most vulnerable species.
Call on your elected leaders to back strong funding for wildlife crossings in the transportation bill Congress is considering right now. Add your name today to help save wildlife from needless deaths.
