Support Stormwater Rules for Clean Water!
Keep North Carolina Water Clean!
North Carolina is making a critical decision about stormwater pollution and we are asking citizens across the state to speak out for clean water!
Stormwater is rain runoff from developed areas, construction sites, roads, parking lots, etc. that pollutes our waterways and causes hazardous flash flooding. The US Environmental Protection Agency reports that contaminated surface runoff is the number one cause of impaired surface water quality in North Carolina.
These rules are being considered right now! The public has until May 16 to comment on the need for protection of NC's water resources. Please show your support for clean water by signing the petition below and asking the NC Environmental Management Commission to ensure protection of our states surface waters for swimming and fishing.
We ask the state Environmental Management Commission (EMC) to adopt an effective Phase II stormwater program to ensure protection of our states surface waters for swimming and fishing.
In particular, we would like the Phase II stormwater program to include:
· Requirements for effective stormwater control structures for development that will have over 12 percent built upon area to help
·Requirements that counties automatically be covered by this rule (as cities are) to ensure there are no gaps in the program and all stormwater sources are managed adequately.
·Provisions for protecting shellfishing (SA) waters.
·Provisions for 30 foot vegetated buffers for new development to effectively and inexpensively control sediment and nutrient pollution.
We urge you to protect the health and well-being of North Carolinas citizens by adopting effective Phase II stormwater rules.
