A handful of current and former members of the Sweetwater Police Department in Florida have been arrested and face charges for years of abusing Sweetwater residents.
In some cases, they illegally entered homes and took valuables; in several instances, they even stole vehicles. Worse, though, these officers engaged in torture to force false confessions to property crimes – this involved beatings for hours and even waterboarding. At least twice, this occurred within the SPD station itself.
Right now only a handful of SPD officers are facing charges. Though state and federal investigators say there is no reason to think administration is at fault, that seems hard to buy.
Roberto Fulgueira was chief of the Sweetwater Police Department during the time when these abuses occurred. That means there are just two possibilities: Fulgueira was aware of what his force was doing or, at best, was criminally negligent by somehow lacking knowledge of this.
Regardless, for true justice to be realized, Fulgueira needs to face prosecution from Florida Attorney General’s Office of Statewide Prosecution in Miami. Add your name to and share this petition to make your voice heard!
