Tell the BLM: Drop your disastrous horse and burro population management plan!

In 2018, the BLM rounded up and removed 846 wild horses and 41 burros -- nearly the entire population -- from the Warm Springs Herd Management Area (HMA) in Oregon, which encompasses nearly 500,000 acres. The agency estimates that 30 horses and 30 burros remained after the roundup.

Of the horses removed, 100 mares were slated to be used in controversial experimental surgical sterilization. Those cruel experiments were blocked after a federal court issued an injunction following a lawsuit filed by horse protection nonprofits.

The BLM now plans to return just 66 horses and no burros to the range. This will leave fewer than 1 horse per 5,000 acres and 1 burro per 17,000 acres in this expansive public lands area! In short, the BLM is releasing too few horses to maintain a healthy, viable population. Furthermore, the fate of those who will not be released is very uncertain.

The agency is currently accepting public comments on their plan. We need your help to speak up on behalf of these horses.

Sign this petition to urge the BLM to drop their disastrous plan. They must increase the number of wild horses and burros they plan to return to the range and use humane, scientifically recommended forms of population management.

To the Bureau of Land Management,

As a member of the Habitat for Horses community, I demand you return a viable number of wild horses and burros to the Warm Springs Herd Management Area and ensure that the remaining equine go to good homes. Wild horses are a heritage species and deserve our protection.

The excuse of "overpopulation" doesn't ring true in an area of more than 500,000 acres. And returning just 66 horses and no burros to that vast range is far less than is required to maintain a healthy, viable population. Further, the BLM has failed to ensure that the horses kept will not be sold for slaughter.

[Your comments]

I am signing this letter as someone who cares about wild equine and believes they deserve to roam freely on public lands. I join with other animal advocates in demanding an immediate end to your inhumane efforts to destroy wild horses.

Sincerely,
