Protect California's Land, Water, and Outdoor Recreation!

The Lake Tahoe Basin, the California Desert, Point Reyes National Seashore, the Headwaters Forest, and the Sierra Nevada's national forests – these are just a few of California's spectacular places that the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) has helped to protect.

Unfortunately, on September 30th, Congress allowed the LWCF authorization to expire. Now, this essential program must be reauthorized before the end of the year if it is going to continue in 2019.

The LWCF takes revenues – up to $900 million in royalties every year – from the depletion of offshore oil and gas reserves and directs it to conservation of our land and water. The money provides grants to protect natural places and provide local communities with matching funds for parks and recreation projects.

California alone has received approximately $2.5 billion in LWCF funding over the past five decades. Every $1 of LWCF money invested creates $4 in economic value!

We only have until the end of the year to ensure this essential tool for protecting California's outstanding lands, waters, and recreation is passed.

Sign and tell your Congressional representative to do everything they can to pass the authorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
Dear Representative:

I am writing today to urge you to do what you can to authorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). In its five decades of existence, the LWCF has provided the funds for over 40,000 projects with projects in all 50 states. During that time it has also protected 2.3 million acres of forests. The LWCF is also an economic engine with every $1 of LWCF money invested creating $4 in economic value.

California alone has received approximately $2.5 billion in LWCF funding over the past five decades including protecting areas in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the California Desert, Point Reyes National Seashore, the Headwaters Forest, and the Sierra Nevada's national forests. Priority projects for the coming year include the Headwaters National Forest Reserve, Sand to Snow National Monument, the Sierra Nevada checkerboard lands, and the Trinity Divide-Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, among others.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) was designed to take revenues from the depletion of offshore oil and gas reserves and direct it to the conservation of our land and water. Every year, up to $900 million in royalties are paid by energy companies. This fund provides important revenue for conservation projects without ever having to touch taxpayer money.

[Your Comment]

Please encourage your colleagues and leadership to pass the authorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund. It is an essential tool in protecting California's outstanding lands, waters, and recreation.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
