Canada without maple trees? This may be difficult to picture, but in as little as ten years, it may become a reality if we don't take action now.
As a result of climate change, habitat degradation, invasive species and pollution, Canada's biodiversity is in serious peril.
This is devastating news for Canada's $80.4 million sugar maple industry. Losing the sugar maple would be a great loss to Canada's economy. The timber, fish, and agriculture are suffering as well, as all are extremely susceptible to the worsening environmental conditions.
After Ontario's strategy to protect and restore biodiversity expired last year, there have so far been no plans to adopt an updated version.
Tell Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty that cutting the budget and failing to adopt a new biodiversity strategy plan will put Canada's people and economy in a dangerous position.

I am writing to express my deep concern for the effects that Ontario's declining environment will make on the economy.
We are currently losing sugar maples at a rapid rate, which would create a devastating impact upon the multimillion dollar sugar maple industry. The disappearing of the sugar maple would be a great loss, not to mention cruelly ironic since it is, after all, the well-known symbol of Canada.

In addition, the fish industry in the Great Lakes is already suffering as a result of pollution, climate change, and acid deposition. Major concerns are being raised about business surrounding agriculture and timber as well, as both are extremely susceptible to the worsening environmental factors.
Cutting the budget and failing to adopt a new biodiversity strategy plan will put Canada's people and economy in a dangerous position. The current government must face the facts that we are losing many things that are useful, marketable, and also necessary to Canada and the world.
I urge you to consider the impact that environment has on the nation, and the dire consequences that will affect Canada's environment, economy, and people if you continue to further slash the budget of the environment and natural resources ministry.
Please, make the environment a priority before it is too late.
