Greyhound is being ICE cold. The intercity transportation company is shuttling their own passengers directly to "Deportation Station." The company has decided to work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) by allowing Border Patrol officers to board their buses without warrant nor a specific suspect, and ask passengers for their documentation.
The worst part is they don't have to do this. Border Patrol, like other law enforcement officials needs the warrant to do any search. But just like Motel 6 — which recently admitted to passing guest information on to immigration officials —
Greyhound is abusing their own customers' trust and putting their future at risk because they have folded to government pressure. Under the Trump Administration, Border Patrol has become even more aggressive in their search to deport as many people as possible. In addition to harassing Greyhound passengers, they have demanded ID from passengers leaving domestic airports and pressured Amtrak riders for their documents as well.
But according to several human rights organizations, companies DON'T have to, nor should they allow Border Patrol to board. Greyhound has the right to demand a warrant, and if Border Patrol refuses to produce one, they would be in breach of the Fourth Amendment, which protects against unreasonable search and seizure.
When Border Patrol — with no proof of a crime or suspect — is allowed to board a Greyhound bus and detain and harass passengers until they produce proper ID, the passengers' rights are being infringed upon.
Tell Greyhound to stand up to ICE and stop allowing Border Patrol to conduct warrantless searches of their vehicles and passengers. Sign the petition.
