Institutionalization is Not the Answer for People With Disabilities

Can you imagine living your life without being able to make choices for yourself?

Sadly, this is life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) that are living a life of solitude in institutional settings.

Being part of the community and living independently as possible are among the most important values and goals shared by people with disabilities, their families, and advocates. Evidence has shown that community living is more cost effective and results in a better quality of life. This is a human and civil rights issue - in 2013 we no longer have the excuse that we don’t know any better.

Outdated policies and programs often unnecessarily segregate people with I/DD. The lack of affordable, accessible housing contributes to this problem. A safe place to call home is a basic right; we have a responsibility to ensure individuals with disabilities are given the chance to find a home in the community they choose.

Join The Arc and show your support for a future of inclusion for individuals with I/DD. Please sign our petition and stand up against unnecessary institutionalization.
