Save Orlando's History

Orlando's historic resources continue to be threatened by demolition.  From the Dolive Building on Orange Ave, Hillman house at 334 Broadway Ave, the Washington St. homes on Lake Eola and now the church building across the street from the St. James Cathedral School at Cathcart Ave and Ridgewood St.

It is the opinion of this neighborhood association that any deteriorated condition of this building is due to the inaction of the Catholic Diocese and can be readily corrected for the proposed cost of the demolition and any future new development costs.

Demolition not only erases Orlando's physical connection with its past it also is detrimental to the environment as materials are thrown into a landfill and any replacement development requires the energy for fabrication, delivery and assembly.  The school's cry "safety for the children" rings hollow.

Do not reward demolition by neglect with approval; this demolition is wrong for our heritage and wrong for our environment.

Orlando's Historic Preservation Board will hear the church's request for demolition on August 6th at 4pm in City Council Chambers. (free parking available across the street).  Following the outcome of this hearing the item will be heard by Orlando City Council in the near future.

Let Orlando's leaders know by signing and sending this petition.

Re:       Request to demolish the Central Christian Church at 331 Cathcart Ave.

Dear Commissioner Sheehan;

We the undersigned are very much concerned about the request to demolish the Central Christian Church at 331 Cathcart Avenue.  This edifice is a beautiful and contributing structure to the Lake Eola Height Historic District and the City of Orlando.

The building has suffered from the recent neglect by the current owners who purchased it in 1999 for $10.  Please do not let this significant part of our community%u2019s culture and the historic district be lost.

We would appreciate whatever support you can provide to keep this building from being demolished.

Thank you for your time and especially for safe-guarding Orlando%u2019s historic resources.
