Build Fuel Cell Filling Stations

What we, the undersigned want to see in Detroit's business plan is an all out effort to mass produce fuel cell automobiles and have them in showrooms not later than mid 2010. The technology is already developed. The difficult problem with accomplishing this by 2010 is developing an efficient method to supply hydrogen for the fuel cell vehicle. Simply stated, we need to develop hydrogen filling stations throughout the country. Since we did this for gasoline-powered vehicles, we can also do this for fuel cell vehicles. Therefore, we propose Congress consider including in Obama's stimulus plan a massive building program of fuel cell filling stations throughout the country. Think of it as building an infrastructure of fuel cell service stations, many of which could be incorporated with existing gasoline stations. Think about how many people could be put to work building such an infrastructure. Think of it as creating a whole new industry that could put thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of people to work developing the technology, designing the stations, building the stations, supplying the stations, and managing the stations, including thousands more people needed to administer the supply network. We are recommending that Congress and President-Elect Obama think outside the box like President Kennedy did when he urged the nation to put a man into orbit. Like we did when we put a man on the moon. Like we did when we built the space station. Simply stated, if we can build a structure in outer space, we certainly can build a hundred thousand fuel cell stations throughout this country and put a lot of people back to work, including those in the American auto industry.
