Give Living Wages and Fair Trade to Charlotte Russe's Suppliers!

The mall-based specialty retailer Charlotte Russe offers cheap clothes but doesn't tell its customers how those clothes were made. Charlotte Russe is largely supplied by sweatshop laborers in countries such as China and Vietnam. Sweatshop laborers are given such low wages that they are considered "non-living wages." This means that if a laborer were to work 60-70 hour week, they still would not be able to live off of their wages. Sweatshops also will hire children and even force people to work overtime without pay as slave-laborers. These sweatshops almost always lack safety and health regulations to protect its workers. If you love Charlotte Russe's clothes and accessories but hate sweatshops, encourage Charlotte Russe to adopt a fair trade agreement with its suppliers! Let's shop without guilt by asking Charlotte Russe to ensure that their clothes are made by fairly paid and fairly treated laborers!
As customers, we feel that it is our right to dispute the conditions under which our clothes are made. Charlotte Russe buys clothes made by sweatshops in China and Vietnam and does not ask its suppliers to provide proof of fair wages or working conditions. This is unacceptable. We are writing to tell Charlotte Russe that we will not buy from sweatshops and child labor anymore. We want you to require that your suppliers provide proof of fair labor practices.

In sweatshops, laborers are underpaid to the point that they cannot live off of the money they earn at the sweatshop. Even though many laborers work 6 days a week, 11 hours a day in the sweatshop, they must still find money elsewhere to survive. Sweatshop laborers are not only unfairly paid, but they are forced to work overtime without compensation and if they refuse, they could be fired. This is slave labor and it exists because workers cannot afford to lose their job and so they quietly endure unfair treatment.

Sweatshops also exploit children. Families that don't have enough money to survive will send their children to work at a sweatshop to earn a few extra pennies. Children who should be out playing are instead hired by sweatshops where they sit and sew for 10-12 hours each day.

The sweatshops that Charlotte Russe buys from are also extremely unsafe for the laborers. Most sweatshops lack safety and health regulations and this causes many of the laborers to become sick or injured at work. Many times, when a laborer becomes ill or injured on the job, they are fired and do not receive medical care from the sweatshop company. There have been many instances where sweatshop laborers have tried to improve their working conditions through labor unions; however, the sweatshop owners simply fire the workers and hire new ones. If Charlotte Russe were to tell its suppliers to provide proof of fair labor practices or threaten to break ties with the sweatshop, the shop would have no option but to implement fair labor practices.

Charlotte Russe has made a profit off the hard work of children and slave laborers and we want this to change. Sweatshops are unfair, dirty and dangerous. All human beings deserve to leave without fear and deserve to work for fair wages and treatment. We recommend that Charlotte Russe immediately look into its supplier's labor practices and tell the suppliers to treat their laborers fairly.
