Support Comprehensive Sex Education and the REAL Act!

Together, we, the undersigned, urge the leaders of Congress to support the Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act (H.R.1653/S.972) to create the first-ever dedicated funding stream for comprehensive sex education.
Programs funded would educate young people about teenage pregnancy and how to prevent sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. These
programs would also teach about such topics as healthy relationships and communication skills.
It is time for policymakers to get REAL about giving young people the reliable, accurate information they need to make responsible decisions and stay
healthy.
Would you sign our petition to show your to support for real, age-appropriate sex education that emphasizes both the benefits of abstinence while also teaching about contraception, and the prevention of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections?
As you may know, the previous administration wasted more than $1 billion on ineffective abstinence-only programs. President Obama supports medically accurate, evidence based sex education to help prevent diseases, and reduce teen pregnancy. He has provided funding for sex ed in his budget.
An estimated 750,000 American teens will become pregnant this year and nearly four million will contract a sexually transmitted infection. According to a recent study from the University of Washington, students who receive comprehensive sex education were less likely to become teen parents as those who receive abstinence-only information.
Please consider these points when thinking about this issue:
*Planned Parenthood is a trusted provider of sex education programs that teach medically accurate, age-appropriate information that help reduce teen pregnancy and prevent sexually transmitted infections.
*This is clearly a public health crisis, but it is a crisis that is preventable.
*Medically accurate, age-appropriate sex education gives teens the tools to make responsible decisions to prevent sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy, and lead healthy, productive lives.
*As a parent, it can be difficult talking to your kids about sex. We need education programs in our schools that will keep teens healthy %u2014 by including information about abstinence as well as contraception, healthy communication, responsible decision making, and prevention of sexually transmitted infections.
Please help us in supporting this vital piece of legislation. A national effort is under way this week to gather signatures, and create visibility around this issue. Thank you for your time and support!
