Restore Wantagh Elementary Assistant Principal
Lack of administrative support at Wantagh Elementary School!
Currently, we have only one administrative person, Dr.Sternberg, for 716 students and over 70 staff members. Forest Lake and Mandalay operate with HALF the number of students and personnel. With continuing increase in state mandated requirements it will be impossible for Dr.Sternberg to fulfill them alone. There are programs that our Assistant principal would oversee that have been stopped and/or put on hold due to lack of leadership.
Elementary schools throughout Nassau county that are as large as ours (13 of them) all have full time AP's.
Please let Wantagh BOE know that we request the appropriate administartive staff to be restored, as soon as possible, to keep our school for our children the best educational source it can be.
We the undersigned fully support the letter below and implore you to restore our greatly needed assistant pricipal.
The Board of Education, Dr. Marsh, Dr. Bonuso,
We are writing to you today to address the issue of restoring the full-time assistant principal at Wantagh Elementary School. As you know Dr. Sternberg so graciously agreed to give up the part time Assistant Principal that was in place 2010-2011 to help close the gap in the budget. The community was under the impression he was giving up the AP in order to save teachers jobs and keep class sizes the same. However we came to find out that position was not to save teachers jobs but to add an administrative position/time in the high school. That was a MISTAKE as far as our school is concerned and had all the FACTS been laid out Wantagh El. parents would not have been so supportive of that budget. We do not have to tell you that Wantagh El has 716 student and that our school is the home to ALL Inclusion-blended classes. This means we have many more teachers/assistants and staff in our school (71 to be exact !). Thats approximately 47 more than Mandalay and 29 more than Forest Lake. The one hour and ten minute AP that we were provided is laughable. Jill Carroll leaves at the time school starts. That means we have one administrative person -Dr.Sternberg- for 716 students and over 70 staff members all day. Sounds ridiculous doesn't it ! Well it does to the parents of WES..... We beg you to put back in place what was rightfully ours. How is it that all three elementary school have the same administrative support when WES has 358 more students and staff than forest lake and 472 more than mandalay. We can furnish the list of Elementary schools throughout Nassau county that are as large as ours and all 13 have full time AP's.
Also with the continuing increase in state mandated requirements it will be impossible for Dr.Sternberg to fulfill them alone in the coming years. We have seen the teachers, secretaries and staff all pitch in to help fulfill the lacking administrative presence. Ask yourself how long will that last before the well oiled machine ,we know as WES. breaks down. Already there have been programs that our Ap would oversee that have been stopped and/or put on hold due to lack of leadership. We are asking for the appropriate amount of administrative support for our building. The teachers, staff, parents and students are in need of YOUR support in this matter.
