Signal Hill Mall - the Cry for Attention

I have lived in Statesville, North Carolina for the full 16 years of my life; I was born in Iredell Memorial Hospital and have grown up in the hillsides surrounding the "urban" area. Although I have not been around long enough to see the full dwindling appearance and performance of Signal Hill Mall, I believe I have seen enough to come to the conclusion that the citizens of Statesville would like to see a change. Recently, news of Sears Holdings companies, Sears and K-Mart, revealed that a total of 120 Sears stores nationwide would be closing, four being in North Carolina. One of these four happens to be Statesville's own Sears Department store, located in Signal Hill Mall. This knocks out a total of two of the original department stores that had been there since the beginning - the late Peebles being the other that closed, and JCPenney, and Belk being the two survivors. This hurts both the economic growth of Statesville, as well as the expansion that I have wanted to see all of these years. It now appears to me that the downtown area as well as the Walmart area are the only things getting Statesville by, and even then the citizens are the only ones visiting. Tourism is needed to both sustain and create jobs within this area; to be honest, farming isn't cutting it for Iredell County anymore. If we were to become a city equal to Hickory or Mooresville, I believe our local economy and job growth numbers would skyrocket. This change could start with our mall. By decreasing the rent for store slots (if possible), filling in the vacant spaces with chain-stores or more preferably independent stores, and not missing great opportunities given to the mall and Statesville, I fully believe that this town could become something fun, exciting, and attractive to those of all ages. We need to stop relying on Walmart and annual fesitivals to get by. It's time for a change in Statesville that can simply start by expanding or inviting small businesses into our mall. Thank you.
Dear Statesville Chamber of Commerce and Signal Hill Mall Management,
My name is Tesia Marie-Smith. I am currently a Junior at North Iredell High School and have lived in Statesville, North Carolina all of my life. I have been here to see the growing need and want of economic and job growth within Iredell County. To my understanding, Statesville is the county chair for Iredell County; yet we have a city like Mooresville to our south with a booming business and constant attention from both locals and tourists. I praise the city board for allowing an update to the downtown area - let's expand that idea. I believe Signal Hill Mall has ample opportunity to grow and bring in more tourists and locals alike. By now you have probably heard of the Sears Holdings company closing 120 stores across the nation, four being in North Carolina, and one of those being Statesville's own Sears Department store. One could look at this issue and shrug their shoulders, thinking that jobs held by those employed there were more than likely part-time. There are plenty of people within that store that have had management positions there for a long time; there are people there who make a living off of that salary. Even those who are working part-time need that job to attend colleges and pay for common expenses such as gas and bills. I believe the performance of Sears over the years has been great and this news leaves me speechless. I fully believe that the issue is the location of the Sears, because Signal Hill Mall needs to be revived. Sears employees are not the only ones who have fallen victim to this; stores before it such as Clarie's, Peebles, and Chic-Fil-A have also suffered greatly. It would amaze me to see that mall hold more than 200 people at one time, aside from employee's, inside it's walls, on a normal day. The possibilities of Statesville as we know it rest within Signal Hill Mall for the sake of Iredell County's economy, jobs, and citizens. If possible, please consider what I have said and start thinking of the many possibilities that can emerge from this idea. I see so much potential in our small town, and I have no doubt in my mind that one day, those old and young alike, will agree that Statesville has evolved into a respectable and amazing place to be. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this letter as well as the signatures attached.
Sincerely,
A concerned citizen of Statesville, North Carolina
