Stop Virginia "Personhood" Bill
- av: Emily V.
- mottagare: Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and Virginia Senate
The Virginia House of Delegates just approved a "personhood" bill that states that human life begins at conception. A similar bill passed the House last year, but did not make it through the Senate. This year, though, supporters of the bill believe it could pass the Republican majority Senate and be signed into law by Republican Governor Bob McDonnell.
The bill would require every part of Virginia law that uses the word "person" to apply to fetuses also. It uses such broad language that it could mean families and doctors could face criminal and civil suits not only for abortions, but also for the use of birth control and any pregnancies that result in miscarriage.
This extreme bill is another example in the many recent efforts to limit women's reproductive rights. Take action now to tell the Virginia Senate and Governor Bob McDonnell to stop this legislative attack on women's freedom and privacy.
We the undersigned urge you not to pass the "personhood" bill recently approved by the Virginia House of Delegates.
The bill, which would require every part of Virginia law that uses the word "person" to apply to fetuses also, uses such broad language that it could mean families and doctors could face criminal and civil suits not only for abortions, but also for the use of birth control and even for pregnancies that result in miscarriage.
This bill is an extreme effort to limit women's reproductive rights, as well as women's freedom and privacy. We therefore call on you to reject the bill when it reaches you.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
