USE MORE LOCAL ARTISTS FOR PUBLIC ARTS PROGRAMS

Greenville is filled with lots of beauty , but like any city there are lots of spaces in Greenville that are lacking art or could benefit from a facelift with  art. Why not hire local artists at a low cost to help with city development and multiplying the beauty of the community? At least half of all yearly public rrts projects should solicit and hire local  artists  chosen through a juried process.  Concerning Public Art Greenville also needs the following.

  1. Greenville  really needs an active Public Mural Program  with a database of local artists that could apply for city and privately sponsored projects. These projects could range from mostly paid  to some free assignments.

  1. Greenville should sponsor large scale outdoor permanent sculpture projects. Many cities have  strong public works projects that include yearly artist commissioned sculpture projects.  Such locations as the Heritage Green could benefit from a curbside better defined by enhanced public art.

  1. Local trash containers could be painted and sculpted to create unique  eye catching waste receptacles. The city containers that exist now could be revamped with the help of local artists, plus the city could invest in even more containers at public locations that could be decorated by artists at an extremely low costs. In the long run it could save the city lots of money  to use local artists to recycle containers.  MAC did a similar project in downtown Greenville.

  1. A yearly temporary outdoor sculpture festival  could help support local artists, provide an additional  fun excursion for residents,  increase city revenue as an event, as well as funding for the local art museum.

      5.  Lower  or remove permit costs for public art  projects to create an                climate where public  art is encourage more and is more accessible              for visibility and corporate  funding.

We'd all like to see Greenville continue to flourish in the 21st century  and encourage the city will act on this points  in an effort to lower costs, stir the economy through the visual arts and improve the community
