PATIENTS BILL OF RIGHTS

A recent investigation by "Marketplace" ( Canadian investigative journalism ) found that Canada has the highest rate of hospital-acquired infections in the developed world. Over 20,000 Canadians get sick from hospital caused infections every month. That is an atrociously high number for a country of 36 million people.  A recent study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that of the over 2 million yearly hospital admissions in Canada,185,000 of those admissions result in an "unintended patient injury, death or disability due to health-care management mistakes". A PATIENTS BILL OF RIGHTS  would  make it easier to get compensation/justice for victims of any wrongdoing by any hospital or medical institution which leads to illness, injury or death of the patient. This bill would simplify/streamline the process of compensating patient/victims without having to resort to, costly to all, medical malpractice litigation. Studies have shown that in jurisdictions where the process of compensating patient/victims was quicker and fairer the overall costs to all concerned, and to society, were lower than in the dragged out system of medical malpractice litigation through the courts. The more adverserial court litigation process often takes many years to resolve and is especially unfair to the patient/victims and their families.
