Secure rights for older women in emergencies
We, as the Ageing, Disability, and Diversity Task Force (ADDTF) are committed to advocating for the rights of older people, persons with disabilities, especially older women with disabilities, and diversities. We understand the unique challenges they face, especially during crises and emergencies.
Older women are often the strength of us all in chaos of emergencies, their needs are frequently overlooked or underrepresented. We must recognize and address the specific vulnerabilities that older women encounter in such situations.
During emergencies, older women can face a multitude of challenges: from mobility issues and health vulnerabilities to a lack of economic resources and support systems. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), older individuals, particularly women, are significantly more likely to experience negative health outcomes during emergencies. This reality calls for immediate and decisive action.
To address this, we developed and implemented emergency protocols that specifically cater to the needs of older women. These protocols include specialized healthcare services, mobility support, and economic assistance. We know that it is equally important to ensure that emergency responders are trained to recognize and address the specific needs of older women, guaranteeing they receive the care and support they deserve.
By prioritizing older women in our emergency response plans, not only can we ensure their safety and well-being, but we can also empower them to continue being resilient pillars within our communities. Their wisdom, experience, and resilience in the face of adversity are invaluable, and protecting them benefits all of us.
Join us in urging local and national governments, as well as humanitarian organizations, to prioritize the rights of older women in our emergency response strategies.
Take this pledge to ensure that older women are not left behind in times of crisis, and that they receive the respect and care they deserve.
Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of older women worldwide. Please take this pledge with us!
