Tell Manitoba Police that a Teen Swearing is not a Criminal Offence

A 17-year-old teenage boy was arrested for "causing a disturbance for swearing" at his high school.  He was released to his parents, and is set to attend a trial this spring.

"Causing a disturbance by swearing" is a charge that is usually used when the individual is intoxicated and fighting, or when threats are being made to individuals or property.  Neither of these instances were reported.  Taking a teenager to court for swearing would be a waste of resources, and may not be effective in improving the student's behaviour at school.  Instead, the school should implement disciplinary action to help the teen learn from his mistake.

Ask the Manitoba Police to re-examine this incident to determine if this charge is truly necessary and work with the school on discipline and corrective action.
