Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is one of the very best horror films of all time. One of the things which make The Shining so unique is the visionary style in which it was directed, including the selection of a 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Kubrick often shot his films in this ratio versus the traditional academy ratio of 1.85:1 or Panavision's 2.35:1, allowing him to take advantage of the full vertical depth of the image to give real height and scope to his films.
